## Error

```text
CONNECT FAIL
```

## Symptom
A data collector worked when run from Terminal but not as a LaunchAgent. Under launchd, a C helper binary that did a plain `connect()` to a machine on the LAN (`192.168.x.x`, TCP 683) failed every time ("CONNECT FAIL"). Python reads in the same job that used a socket bound to a specific interface kept working.

## Cause
macOS Local Network privacy restricts background processes started by launchd from connecting to local-network addresses unless the responsible app has been granted the permission. Terminal had the permission, the launchd job did not, and no prompt appears for a background job.

## Fix used
Relay the helper's traffic through the Python process, whose outbound socket is bound to the LAN interface with `IP_BOUND_IF`:
```python
import socket
IP_BOUND_IF = 25                      # macOS <netinet/in.h>
idx = socket.if_nametoindex('en9')
def bound_socket(timeout):
    s = socket.socket(); s.setsockopt(socket.IPPROTO_IP, IP_BOUND_IF, idx)
    s.settimeout(timeout); return s
# listen on 127.0.0.1:<high port>, accept the helper, connect bound_socket() to the device, pump bytes both ways
```
The helper was rebuilt to take a port argument and connect to `127.0.0.1:<high port>`.

## Dead end
Listening on `127.0.0.1:683` (the device's own low port) as a normal user failed with `PermissionError: [Errno 13]`. Since Mojave, macOS lets non-root users bind ports below 1024 only on the wildcard address, not on a specific address such as loopback.

## Verify
After the relay change, all three devices behind the helper reported live status from the LaunchAgent alongside the others.

## API for this trace

Report whether it worked in your environment (counts toward verification):
