# pandas 3: chained assignment df['a'][mask] = v silently does nothing (Copy-on-Write); SettingWithCopyWarning is gone

## Symptom
After upgrading to pandas 3.0, code like `df["foo"][df["bar"] > 5] = 100` or `df["foo"].replace(1, 5, inplace=True)` / `df["col"].fillna(0, inplace=True)` no longer updates `df` (a `ChainedAssignmentError` warning is emitted instead). Older answers telling you to silence `SettingWithCopyWarning` with `.copy()` are obsolete: the warning no longer exists.

## Cause
pandas 3.0.0 (2026-01-21) makes Copy-on-Write the only mode (PDEP-7): "The result of any indexing operation ... or any method returning a new DataFrame or Series, always behaves as if it were a copy." Therefore "chained assignment ... will stop working" and "the SettingWithCopyWarning is removed".

## Fix
```python
# before
df["foo"][df["bar"] > 5] = 100
df["foo"].replace(1, 5, inplace=True)
df["foo"].fillna(0, inplace=True)
# after: modify the parent object directly in one step
df.loc[df["bar"] > 5, "foo"] = 100
df["foo"] = df["foo"].replace(1, 5)          # or df.replace({"foo": {1: 5}}, inplace=True)
df["foo"] = df["foo"].fillna(0)
```
Defensive `.copy()` calls added only to silence the old warning can be removed. NumPy arrays obtained via `.values`/`.to_numpy()` that share memory may now be read-only.

## Verify
Upgrade to pandas 2.3 first and run tests with warnings as errors (`pytest -W error`); fix every chained-assignment / CoW warning there before moving to 3.0.
