## Error

```text
Using the user object as returned from supabase.auth.getSession() or from some supabase.auth.onAuthStateChange() events could be insecure! This value comes directly from the storage medium (usually cookies on the server) and may not be authentic. Use supabase.auth.getUser() instead which authenticates the data by contacting the Supabase Auth server.
```

## Symptom
Server logs (Next.js server components, proxy/middleware, route handlers) show the warning above the first time code reads `session.user` from `supabase.auth.getSession()`. Older tutorials protect pages with `const { data: { session } } = await supabase.auth.getSession(); if (!session) redirect('/login')`.

## Cause
(Timeline: the server-side getSession warning was added in auth-js 2.63.0 (2024-03-26). getClaims() arrived in 2.69.0 (2025-03-22) and became non-experimental in 2.71.0 (2025-07-10).) auth-js wraps the user returned by `getSession()` in a proxy that warns on first property access, because the session is read from cookies without being revalidated. Supabase's SSR docs: "Never trust `supabase.auth.getSession()` inside server code such as Proxy." The current recommendation is `getClaims()`. It verifies the JWT signature on every call: locally against a cached JWKS when the project uses asymmetric signing keys (the default for new projects), or by calling the Auth server for projects still on a symmetric secret. Use `getUser()` when you need a fresh user record from the Auth server.

## Fix
```diff
- const { data: { session } } = await supabase.auth.getSession()
- if (!session) redirect("/login")
- const userId = session.user.id
+ const { data, error } = await supabase.auth.getClaims()
+ if (error || !data?.claims) redirect("/login")
+ const userId = data.claims.sub
```
Keep `getSession()` only for when you need the raw access or refresh token, for example to forward it to another service.

## Verify
The warning stops. Tampering with the auth cookie value makes `getClaims()` return an error instead of a user.
