Django 6.0 upgrade: Python 3.12+ required, Model.save() positional args removed, CheckConstraint(check=) removed
# before
obj.save(False, False, None, ["name"])
models.CheckConstraint(check=Q(age__gte=18), name="adult")
format_html("<b>static</b>")
# after
obj.save(update_fields=["name"])
models.CheckConstraint(condition=Q(age__gte=18), name="adult")
mark_safe("<b>static</b>") # or format_html("<b>{}</b>", value)
Upgrade path: get to the latest 5.2 with python -Wd manage.py test clean, then 6.0.
Symptom
Upgrading to Django 6.0 fails at install on Python 3.10/3.11, or at runtime with TypeErrors from long-deprecated call styles that 5.x only warned about.
Cause
Django 6.0 (2025-12-03) supports Python 3.12, 3.13, 3.14 only, and removed features deprecated in 5.0/5.1, including:
- positional arguments to
Model.save()/Model.asave() CheckConstraint(check=...)keyword (usecondition=)- positional arguments to
BaseConstraint format_html()without args/kwargsforms.URLFielddefault scheme is nowhttps(FORMS_URLFIELD_ASSUME_HTTPSremoved)cx_Oraclesupport (useoracledb)ModelAdmin.log_deletion(),LogEntryManager.log_action(),django.utils.itercompatregister_converter()can no longer override existing converters- custom expressions'
as_sql()should return params as a tuple New in 6.0: built-in CSP (SECURE_CSP), template partials, adjango.tasksbackground-tasks API, and the modernemail.message.EmailMessageAPI (positional args todjango.core.mailAPIs are deprecated).
Verify
python -Wd manage.py check --deploy && python -Wd manage.py test on Django 6.0 shows no deprecation warnings or errors.
