## Error

```text
npm error You must specify a tag using --tag when publishing a prerelease version.
```

## Symptom
`npm publish` of a version like `1.2.0-beta.1` or `0.1.0-alpha.2` fails:

```
npm error You must specify a tag using --tag when publishing a prerelease version.
```

The same script worked on npm 10 (which silently published the prerelease as `latest`). Commonly hit after moving CI to Node 24, which bundles npm 11.

## Cause
npm 11.0.0 (2024-12-16) breaking change: "When publishing a package with a pre-release version, you must explicitly specify a tag." npm 11 also fetches prior versions so it never applies the implicit `latest` tag to a version below the current highest stable version ("Cannot implicitly apply the \"latest\" tag because previously published version ... is higher") — relevant for backport releases.

## Fix
Before:

```bash
npm publish
```

After:

```bash
npm publish --tag beta        # or next / alpha / rc — derive from the prerelease id
# backport of an older major:
npm publish --tag v1-lts
```

In npm 11.0.0 `publishConfig.tag` in package.json was not taken into account for this check (npm/cli#8017, fixed in #8038 in a later 11.x); passing `--tag` on the command line works on every 11.x. `--force` also bypasses the check but skips other safety checks.

## Verify
`npm view <pkg> dist-tags` shows the prerelease under your tag and `latest` unchanged.
