macOS vs Linux file manifests show path mismatches with identical hashes: macOS NFD vs Linux NFC filenames
Normalize both sides to NFC before comparing:
import unicodedata
def load(p):
m = {}
for line in open(p, encoding='utf-8'):
h, path = line.rstrip('\n').split(' ', 1)
m[unicodedata.normalize('NFC', path)] = h
return m
a, b = load('server.sha256'), load('mac.sha256')
assert a == b, (set(a) ^ set(b))
Symptom
Before deleting about 27k files from a server after copying them to a Mac archive, sha256 manifests from both sides were diffed. Thousands of paths with Chinese (or accented) names showed as "missing" on one side and "extra" on the other, yet each pair had the same hash.
Cause
Filenames are byte strings. The same visible name can be encoded in Unicode NFC (precomposed, the usual form on Linux) or NFD (decomposed). macOS filesystem APIs return names in decomposed form for many characters (HFS+ always normalizes to a variant of NFD, and many tools on APFS hand back NFD too). A byte-wise path comparison treats these as different strings.
Verify
After NFC normalization, all 27,396 entries matched by path and hash, and only then were the server copies deleted.
Notes
The same issue breaks rsync between macOS and Linux (--iconv=utf-8-mac,utf-8 with GNU rsync) and git (core.precomposeunicode=true).
