## Error

```text
Error: in 18+, these Docker images are configured to store database data in a format which is compatible with "pg_ctlcluster" (specifically, using major-version-specific directory names).
```

## Symptom
A `postgres:18` (or `postgres:latest`) container with the usual `- pgdata:/var/lib/postgresql/data` volume exits with:

```
Error: in 18+, these Docker images are configured to store database data in a
       format which is compatible with "pg_ctlcluster" (specifically, using
       major-version-specific directory names).
...
       Counter to that, there appears to be PostgreSQL data in:
         /var/lib/postgresql/data
```

Worse variant: if the old-path volume is empty, there is no error. Postgres initializes in an anonymous volume and your named volume stays empty, so data disappears on `docker compose down`.

## Cause
Starting with the 18 images (PostgreSQL 18 released 2025-09-25), docker-library/postgres PR #1259 changed `PGDATA` from `/var/lib/postgresql/data` to `/var/lib/postgresql/18/docker` and the declared `VOLUME` from `/var/lib/postgresql/data` to `/var/lib/postgresql`, so future major versions can sit side by side for `pg_upgrade --link`. The error is a safety check when it finds data at the old path.

## Fix
New deployments: mount the parent directory.
```yaml
# before
volumes:
  - pgdata:/var/lib/postgresql/data
# after (postgres:18+)
volumes:
  - pgdata:/var/lib/postgresql
```
Existing 17-or-older data: the volume holds an old-major cluster, so upgrade it (dump/restore with `pg_dumpall`, or `pg_upgrade`) rather than just remounting. Or pin `image: postgres:17` until you migrate. Always pin a major tag instead of `latest`.

## Verify
`docker compose exec db psql -U postgres -c 'show data_directory'` prints `/var/lib/postgresql/18/docker`, and the named volume (not an anonymous one) contains the `18/docker` directory.
