TypeError: Cannot read properties of undefined (reading 'prototype') in buffer-equal-constant-time on Node 25+
TypeError: Cannot read properties of undefined (reading 'prototype')
Upgrade the chain so jwa uses crypto.timingSafeEqual (jwa 1.4.2 / 2.0.1, published 2025-05-07, only lazy-load the old package when timingSafeEqual is missing):
npm ls buffer-equal-constant-time jwa # find who pulls it
npm install jsonwebtoken@^9.0.3 # depends on jws ^4.0.1 -> jwa ^2.0.1
If the chain comes from another package, force the patched jwa:
// package.json (npm) — use pnpm.overrides / resolutions for pnpm / yarn
"overrides": { "jwa": "^2.0.1" }
Then reinstall so the lockfile resolves jwa >= 1.4.2 / >= 2.0.1. In your own code, replace SlowBuffer(n) with Buffer.allocUnsafeSlow(n). Short-term: run Node 24 LTS.
Symptom
A server using JWTs (jsonwebtoken → jws → jwa) dies at startup on Node 25+ with TypeError: Cannot read properties of undefined (reading 'prototype') at .../buffer-equal-constant-time/index.js:37:35 — before any app code runs. Works on Node 22/24.
Cause
buffer.SlowBuffer (DEP0030) was runtime-deprecated in Node 24 and moved to End-of-Life (removed) in Node 25.0.0 (2025-10-15): "The SlowBuffer class has been removed. Please use Buffer.allocUnsafeSlow(size) instead." The abandoned buffer-equal-constant-time@1.0.1 (last published 2013) reads SlowBuffer.prototype.equal at module load. Old lockfiles pin jwa@1.4.1 / jwa@2.0.0, which require('buffer-equal-constant-time') eagerly.
Verify
npm ls jwa shows 1.4.2+/2.0.1+; node -e "require('jsonwebtoken')" exits cleanly on Node 25+.
