Next.js 16: next/image quality={90} silently becomes 75 — images.qualities now defaults to [75]

Fix

List every quality you use:

// next.config.ts
import type { NextConfig } from 'next'
const nextConfig: NextConfig = {
  images: {
    qualities: [50, 75, 90, 100],
  },
}
export default nextConfig

Then <Image quality={90} ... /> is honoured. Restart next dev after changing next.config.

Symptom

After upgrading to Next.js 16, <Image quality={90} /> (or 50, 100…) looks the same as the default quality. The served URL uses q=75. Direct requests to /_next/image?url=...&w=...&q=90 (custom loaders, CDN warmers, hand-built URLs) return HTTP 400. Agents assume any 1–100 quality value is accepted.

Cause

Next.js 16.0 (2025-10-21) changed the default images.qualities from allowing all qualities ([1..100]) to only [75]. A quality prop not in the list is coerced to the closest allowed value, and unsupported q values on the optimizer endpoint return 400 (see the docs error next-image-unconfigured-qualities).

Verify

In DevTools the <img> srcset URLs contain q=90, and curl -I "http://localhost:3000/_next/image?url=%2Fhero.jpg&w=1080&q=90" returns 200, not 400.
