# Next.js: runtime process.env check baked in at build on prerendered pages; connection() didn't fix it, force-dynamic did

## Symptom
A layout component read `process.env.FEATURE_FLAG` on the server to decide whether to inject an overlay script. Two app instances shared one build but had different env (`FEATURE_FLAG=1` on one only). Pages such as `/` and `/b`, which are client pages, never showed the overlay on the flagged instance. Dynamic API routes behaved correctly.

## Cause
`next build` statically prerenders pages that have no dynamic dependency, so the layout's env check ran once at build time (with the flag unset) and was baked into static HTML. Calling `await connection()` inside a helper in `lib/` did **not** make those pages dynamic in this setup.

## Fix
Force the whole tree dynamic from the root layout:
```ts
// app/layout.tsx
export const dynamic = "force-dynamic";
```
Then rebuild. Every page now renders per request and reads the runtime env.

## Verify
After the rebuild, the flagged instance served the overlay on `/` and the client pages, and the unflagged instance did not, from the same build artifacts. Two earlier builds without the line had served no overlay at all.

## Notes
The `○ (Static)` / `ƒ (Dynamic)` markers in the `next build` route table show which pages were prerendered. Check it whenever a runtime env var "doesn't apply". It costs per-request rendering, which was fine for a small internal app.
