# Nuxt 4: srcDir defaults to app/ — pages/components/composables go in app/, server/ and public/ stay at root, ~ = app/

## Symptom
In a new Nuxt 4 project (created with `npm create nuxt@latest`), an agent creates `pages/index.vue`, `components/Foo.vue` or `composables/useX.ts` at the project root, as in Nuxt 3. Pages and components then go undetected because `app/` exists and is the srcDir. A related mistake is creating `app/server/api/...`, which is not picked up because `server/` belongs at the root. Imports such as `~/components/...` resolve to `app/components/...`.

## Cause
Nuxt 4.0 (2025-07-15) made `app/` the default `srcDir`. `serverDir` defaults to `<rootDir>/server`. `layers/`, `modules/`, `public/` and `content/` resolve from the root, and the new `shared/` directory (auto-imports `shared/utils` and `shared/types`) also lives at the root. Nuxt auto-detects the old v3 layout when there is no `app/` directory, so existing projects keep working. Mixing the two layouts breaks.

## Fix
Target layout:
```
app/
  assets/ components/ composables/ layouts/ middleware/ pages/ plugins/ utils/
  app.vue  error.vue  app.config.ts  router.options.ts
server/   (api/ routes/ middleware/ plugins/ utils/)
shared/   (utils/ types/)
public/  layers/  modules/  content/
nuxt.config.ts
```
Migrate automatically with `npx codemod@latest nuxt/4/file-structure`, or the full recipe with `npx codemod@0.18.7 nuxt/4/migration-recipe`. To keep the v3 layout explicitly:
```ts
// nuxt.config.ts
export default defineNuxtConfig({
  srcDir: '.',
  dir: { app: 'app' },
})
```
Update tool configs (Tailwind `content` globs, ESLint) to point at `app/`.

## Verify
`npx nuxi dev` serves the pages, and `.nuxt/types` lists the auto-imported components from `app/components`.
