Vite 8 changed default-import interop for CommonJS deps — `import x from 'cjs-pkg'` may be module.exports or .default

Fix

Preferred: make the import unambiguous in your code.

// before (ambiguous)
import lib from 'some-cjs-lib'
// after: pick the shape explicitly
import * as ns from 'some-cjs-lib'
const lib = ns.default ?? ns

Temporary escape hatch (deprecated):

export default defineConfig({
  legacy: { inconsistentCjsInterop: true },
})

Report affected packages upstream, linking Rolldown's 'Ambiguous default import from CJS modules' doc.

Related Vite 8 CJS changes: require() of externalized modules is kept as require (use esmExternalRequirePlugin from 'vite' to convert), and format sniffing between browser/module fields was removed (Vite follows resolve.mainFields order).

Symptom

After upgrading to Vite 8, code that default-imports a CommonJS package (import foo from 'some-cjs-lib') behaves differently than under Vite 7: the value is now the whole module.exports object where it used to be module.exports.default (or vice versa), so calls like foo() or foo.bar fail at runtime, sometimes only in dev or only in build.

Cause

Vite 8 (released 2026-03-12, Rolldown-based) handles the default import from CJS one consistent way in both dev and build. The default import is module.exports if any of these hold:

  • the importer is .mjs or .mts;
  • the importer's closest package.json has "type": "module";
  • the CJS module does not set module.exports.__esModule = true.

Otherwise it is module.exports.default. Previously dev (dependency optimizer) and build (build.commonjsOptions.defaultIsModuleExports: 'auto') used different rules, so the result could differ. build.commonjsOptions is now a no-op.

Verify

Run both vite and vite build && vite preview and exercise the code path; console.log(lib) shows the same shape in both.
