OOM killer kills a live next-server during npm run build on the same production VM (Turbopack build spike)
Out of memory: Killed process <pid> (next-server)
Do not build on the serving box. Build on a workstation or CI, ship .next (+ package.json, public, lockfile) via tar/rsync, run npm ci --omit=dev only if dependencies changed, then pm2 restart. As a stopgap, add swap (fallocate -l 6G /swapfile2 && mkswap && swapon, add to fstab) and reduce pm2 cluster instances for low-traffic apps (pm2 scale app 2).
Symptom
On a 4-core/8 GB VM hosting many pm2-managed Next.js apps, a customer app randomly dies and restarts. dmesg / journalctl -k show OOM kills of a next-server process. Steady-state memory is fine (low load, no swap activity).
Cause
The OOM killer was invoked during next build (kernel log shows the invoking task as Turbopack's tokio-runtime-w). A production build spikes 1–1.5 GB; the kernel then kills the largest process, which is usually an innocent live next-server (~1 GB RSS), not the build.
Verify
journalctl -k | grep -i 'killed process' shows no new OOM kills across subsequent deploys.
Notes
If an ecosystem.config.js says instances: 'max', a blind pm2 start ecosystem.config.js will undo a manual pm2 scale.
