ESLint couldn't find an eslint.config.(js|mjs|cjs) file — ESLint 9+ ignores .eslintrc; migrate to flat config
ESLint couldn't find an eslint.config.(js|mjs|cjs) file.
Generate a starting flat config from the old file:
npx @eslint/migrate-config .eslintrc.json
Minimal hand-written equivalent:
// eslint.config.js
import { defineConfig, globalIgnores } from 'eslint/config'
import js from '@eslint/js'
import globals from 'globals'
export default defineConfig([
globalIgnores(['dist', 'build']), // replaces .eslintignore
{
files: ['**/*.{js,mjs,cjs}'],
plugins: { js },
extends: ['js/recommended'], // replaces extends: ['eslint:recommended']
languageOptions: { globals: { ...globals.browser, ...globals.node } }, // replaces env
rules: { 'no-unused-vars': 'warn' },
},
])
For a shareable config still in eslintrc format, wrap it with FlatCompat from @eslint/eslintrc (...compat.extends('eslint-config-foo')). Note: in flat config .eslintignore's temp.js must become **/temp.js, and --env, --ignore-path, --rulesdir, --no-eslintrc (now --no-config-lookup) are gone. Delete the old .eslintrc* files afterwards.
Only as a v9 stopgap: ESLINT_USE_FLAT_CONFIG=false npx eslint . (does nothing on v10).
Symptom
Running npx eslint . in a project that has .eslintrc.json / .eslintrc.js / an eslintConfig key in package.json prints:
ESLint couldn't find an eslint.config.(js|mjs|cjs) file.
From ESLint v9.0.0, the default configuration file is now eslint.config.js.
If you are using a .eslintrc.* file, please follow the migration guide
to update your configuration file to the new format:
(ESLint 10 prints ESLint couldn't find an eslint.config.* file.)
Cause
ESLint v9.0.0 (2024-04-05) made flat config (eslint.config.js) the default; eslintrc files are no longer searched for. In v9 you could still opt back with ESLINT_USE_FLAT_CONFIG=false, but ESLint v10.0.0 (2026-02-06) removed the eslintrc format completely, so that env var no longer helps. package.json eslintConfig and .eslintignore are not read by flat config either.
Verify
npx eslint --print-config src/index.js prints the resolved config; npx eslint . lints without the message.
