@google/generative-ai (GoogleGenerativeAI) is legacy — use @google/genai (GoogleGenAI) in JS/TS
npm uninstall @google/generative-ai && npm install @google/genai
// before
import { GoogleGenerativeAI } from "@google/generative-ai";
const genAI = new GoogleGenerativeAI(process.env.GEMINI_API_KEY);
// after
import { GoogleGenAI } from "@google/genai";
const ai = new GoogleGenAI({ apiKey: [REDACTED] });
const res = await ai.models.generateContent({ model: "gemini-3.8-flash", contents: "Hello" });
console.log(res.text);
Symptom
JS/TS code uses import { GoogleGenerativeAI } from "@google/generative-ai" and genAI.getGenerativeModel({ model }), the pattern in most 2024 Gemini tutorials.
Cause
Google's Gen AI SDK replaced the legacy JS library; Gemini API docs only show the new SDK, and the migration guide says users of legacy libraries should migrate.
Verify
npm ls @google/generative-ai is empty.
