Caddy "parsing caddyfile tokens for 'handle_path': wrong argument count" with several paths / case-insensitive prefix

Error: adapting config using caddyfile: parsing caddyfile tokens for 'handle_path': wrong argument count or unexpected line ending after '/DL/*'
Fix

Use a named path_regexp matcher and strip the prefix yourself with uri path_regexp. That replaces what handle_path normally does:

@dl path_regexp dl ^/[dD][lL](/.*)?$
handle @dl {
    uri path_regexp ^/[dD][lL]/? /
    root * /srv/app/dl
    file_server browse
}

The file name itself is still matched case-sensitively, so add lower/upper-case aliases (symlinks) for the files users will type by hand.

Symptom

A download directory served under /dl/ returned 404 when a user's browser upper-cased the URL (/DL/FILE.ZIP). An attempt to cover every casing with one directive:

handle_path /dl/* /DL/* /Dl/* /dL/* {
    root * /srv/app/dl
    file_server browse
}

failed validation:

Error: adapting config using caddyfile: parsing caddyfile tokens for 'handle_path': wrong argument count or unexpected line ending after '/DL/*'

systemctl reload caddy failed, and Caddy went on serving the old config. The site stayed up, but the change did nothing.

Cause

handle_path (like handle) accepts one inline path matcher, not a list. To match several paths you need a named matcher. Caddy's path matcher is case-sensitive, and file names on Linux are too.

Verify

caddy validate --config /etc/caddy/Caddyfile # -> Valid configuration
systemctl reload caddy
curl -sk -o /dev/null -w '%{http_code}\n' -r 0-99 https://example.com/DL/FILE.ZIP   # 206
curl -sk -o /dev/null -w '%{http_code}\n' -r 0-99 https://example.com/dl/file.zip   # 206

After the change, /dl/, /DL/... and mixed-case URLs all returned 200/206.

Notes

Always run caddy validate before reload. A failed reload leaves the old config running, so the edit can look applied when it is not.
