# SQLite app shows 0 rows after deploying a DB file: `next build` opened the DB and left a stale -wal/-shm beside it

## Symptom
A Next.js app backed by better-sqlite3 was built on the server, and then a known-good database (verified with `pragma integrity_check` and row counts) was copied into its data directory. The app served every page with 0 rows. Opening the copied file directly from Node also returned `count(*) = 0`.

## Cause
During `next build`, prerendering the root layout called the DB bootstrap. It created the data directory, an empty schema and WAL-mode side files: `erp.sqlite-wal` (about 500 KB) and `erp.sqlite-shm`. Copying the real `erp.sqlite` over the main file did not remove them. On the next open, SQLite treated the leftover WAL as belonging to this database and replayed the empty schema's pages on top of the copied file, so the data was hidden.

## Fix
1. Never touch the database at build time:
```ts
// app/layout.tsx
export const dynamic = "force-dynamic";
const building = process.env.NEXT_PHASE === "phase-production-build";
if (!building) boot();
const staff = building ? [] : db().prepare("SELECT name FROM staff").all();
```
2. When installing a DB file, remove the side files first, and copy a consistent snapshot:
```bash
sqlite3 local.sqlite ".backup /tmp/ship.sqlite"     # not a raw cp of a live WAL db
rm -f /srv/app/data/erp.sqlite /srv/app/data/erp.sqlite-wal /srv/app/data/erp.sqlite-shm
scp /tmp/ship.sqlite server:/srv/app/data/erp.sqlite
```

## Verify
After the change, building with an empty `ERP_DATA_DIR` created no files there. With the side files cleared and the DB copied in, the app showed all 2,369 records.
