PDF with two complete PDFs concatenated: poppler (pdftoppm) reads the first document, pdf-lib reads the last
Normalize at upload time: re-save with the same library that does the final output, and use that normalized file for everything (raster, OCR, matching, printing). Keep the raw file for audit.
import { PDFDocument } from 'pdf-lib';
const doc = await PDFDocument.load(raw, { ignoreEncryption: true });
const clean = await doc.save(); // single, consistent document
fs.writeFileSync(path + '.glued', raw); // keep original
fs.writeFileSync(path, clean);
Detect candidates by counting %%EOF//Catalog occurrences, or by comparing page counts/dimensions between poppler (pdfinfo) and pdf-lib.
Symptom
For some uploaded drawing PDFs, thumbnails/OCR (rendered with poppler) show one drawing, but the PDF produced by pdf-lib (vector stamping/printing) contains a different drawing. A stamp positioned using the poppler raster landed on top of geometry in the printed output, and a matcher read the wrong part number from the file.
Cause
A PDM system exported files consisting of two complete PDF documents glued byte-wise (previous drawing + current drawing). Readers resolve such files differently: poppler parsed the first document; pdf-lib, which honors the last trailer/xref like an incremental update, loaded the second. Files where the appended part has no /Catalog behave the same in both and are harmless.
Verify
13 affected files repaired; 177/177 normal prints were pixel-identical before/after the change, and 81/81 prints of the day had zero ink under the stamp. Test method: "covered ink" = pixels dark in the source render and white in the stamped render.
