Clerk: createRouteMatcher() is deprecated (@clerk/nextjs 7.6) — protect each page/route/action instead of in proxy
Keep clerkMiddleware(), since Clerk needs it, but move auth gates to each resource:
// app/dashboard/page.tsx
import { auth } from "@clerk/nextjs/server"
export default async function Page() {
await auth.protect()
…
}
// server action
"use server"
export async function save() {
const { userId } = await auth.protect()
…
}
For non-auth path logic in the proxy, use config.matcher and req.nextUrl.pathname instead of createRouteMatcher. Clerk ships @clerk/eslint-plugin with the rule @clerk/next/require-auth-protection (ESLint 9+ flat config) plus a Bulk Fixer CLI to find and fix unprotected App Router resources.
Symptom
The standard Clerk pattern const isProtected = createRouteMatcher(["/dashboard(.*)"]); export default clerkMiddleware(async (auth, req) => { if (isProtected(req)) await auth.protect() }) logs a one-time deprecation warning in development. Agents keep generating it as the recommended setup.
Cause
@clerk/nextjs 7.6.0 (2026-07-23) changelog: "Deprecate createRouteMatcher() in favor of resource-based auth checks." It still works, but will be removed in the next major. Clerk's reason: Server Functions (Server Actions) are invoked by ID, not by path, so path matching in middleware/proxy can't reliably protect them.
Verify
The lint rule passes. Calling a server action directly while signed out is rejected.
