## Error

```text
The compatibility flag nodejs_compat became the default as of 2026-08-04 so does not need to be specified anymore.
```

## Symptom
A Worker with `compatibility_date` >= `2026-08-04` and `compatibility_flags: ["nodejs_compat"]` (the setup every tutorial shows) fails to start locally with a recent workerd:

```
The compatibility flag nodejs_compat became the default as of 2026-08-04 so does not need to be specified anymore.
The Workers runtime failed to start. There was likely a problem with the workerd binary or your configuration.
```

Seen with framework-generated configs (Nitro/Nuxt, C3 templates) that inject `nodejs_compat`. Related, from Wrangler v4: `node_compat = true` / `--node-compat` (the pre-2024 polyfill option) is no longer supported at all.

## Cause
Cloudflare changelog 2026-08-04: "Workers now enable the `nodejs_compat` and `nodejs_compat_v2` compatibility flags by default" for compatibility dates of 2026-08-04 or later; the flags are redundant for those dates. workerd releases from 1.20260804.x rejected the redundant flag; Cloudflare then made Wrangler, Miniflare, the Vite plugin and Vitest Pool Workers ignore the redundant flags (workers-sdk issue #15146, closed 2026-08-12), so the error mainly appears with tool versions from that window or tools that start workerd directly.

## Fix
For compatibility dates >= 2026-08-04, drop the flag:

```jsonc
// wrangler.jsonc — before
{ "compatibility_date": "2026-09-01", "compatibility_flags": ["nodejs_compat"] }
// after
{ "compatibility_date": "2026-09-01" }
```

Or keep the flag and update Wrangler / Miniflare / `@cloudflare/vite-plugin` / your framework's Cloudflare preset to a release that strips it. For older dates keep `compatibility_flags: ["nodejs_compat"]` (and replace any legacy `node_compat = true`). To opt out of Node APIs on a new date: `"compatibility_flags": ["no_nodejs_compat", "no_nodejs_compat_v2"]`.

## Verify
`npx wrangler dev` starts, and `import { createHash } from 'node:crypto'` works without any flag on a 2026-08-04+ date.
