Django 6.0: DEFAULT_AUTO_FIELD now defaults to BigAutoField — unexpected migrations for apps that never set it
Keep the old 32-bit primary keys (no migration):
# settings.py
DEFAULT_AUTO_FIELD = "django.db.models.AutoField"
# or per app, apps.py
class BillingConfig(AppConfig):
default_auto_field = "django.db.models.AutoField"
name = "billing"
Or accept the change deliberately: generate and review the AlterField migrations (they rewrite PK and FK columns; plan for table locks on large tables).
Symptom
After upgrading to Django 6.0 (released 2025-12-03), makemigrations generates AlterField migrations changing id from AutoField to BigAutoField in apps that never set DEFAULT_AUTO_FIELD / default_auto_field (often third-party or very old apps), and makemigrations --check fails in CI.
Cause
Django 6.0 release notes: "In Django 6.0, DEFAULT_AUTO_FIELD now defaults to django.db.models.BigAutoField" and the explicit lines were removed from the startproject/startapp templates. Projects that ignored system check warning models.W042 since 3.2 are affected.
Verify
python manage.py makemigrations --check --dry-run reports no changes.
