## Error

```text
Error [ERR_REQUIRE_ESM]: require() of ES Module
```

## Symptom
A CommonJS file `require()`s an ESM-only package (node-fetch 3, chalk 5, etc.) and fails with `Error [ERR_REQUIRE_ESM]: require() of ES Module /.../node_modules/node-fetch/src/index.js from /.../file.js not supported. Instead change the require of index.js ... to a dynamic import() which is available in all CommonJS modules.` Agents typically respond by rewriting to `await import()`, converting the whole project to ESM, or pinning an old CJS version — often unnecessary now.

## Cause
That error is from older Node. `require(esm)` is enabled by default in Node 22.12.0 (2024-12-03), 20.19.0 (2025-03-13), and all of 23+/24+: "Node.js will no longer throw `ERR_REQUIRE_ESM` if `require()` is used to load a ES module." The remaining limit: ESM graphs with top-level `await` throw `ERR_REQUIRE_ASYNC_MODULE`.

## Fix
1. Check the runtime that actually executes the code (CI image, Docker, nvm, Electron/pkg bundles): `node -v` must be >= 20.19.0 / 22.12.0. Node 20 is EOL since 2026-04-30, so prefer 22 or 24 LTS.
2. Then plain `require` works:
```js
const fetch = require('node-fetch'); // ESM namespace object
const { default: chalk } = require('chalk'); // default export lives on .default
```
3. If the stack trace runs through a require hook (`pirates` via ts-node/@babel/register, `pkg` bootstrap), that tool replaces Node's loader — upgrade/replace it.
4. Ensure `NODE_OPTIONS` doesn't contain `--no-experimental-require-module`.
5. Only if the module uses top-level await (`ERR_REQUIRE_ASYNC_MODULE`), fall back to `await import()`.

## Verify
`node -p "process.features.require_module"` prints `true`, and the `require()` call returns the module.
