Next.js 16: next/image returns 400 for images on private/local IPs — set images.dangerouslyAllowLocalIP
Only on trusted private networks:
// next.config.ts
const nextConfig = {
images: {
remotePatterns: [{ protocol: 'http', hostname: 'minio.internal' }],
dangerouslyAllowLocalIP: true, // only for private networks; understand the SSRF risk
// maximumRedirects: 5, // only if your upstream legitimately redirects >3 times
},
}
export default nextConfig
A safer alternative is to serve the images from a public hostname or CDN, or to skip optimization for those images with unoptimized.
Symptom
A self-hosted Next.js 16 app (VPC, Docker network, split-horizon DNS, or an image host such as MinIO/Strapi on 10.x/192.168.x/localhost) gets 400 Bad Request from /_next/image for remote images that worked on 15, even though remotePatterns matches the hostname. Images that redirect more than 3 times now fail as well.
Cause
Next.js 16.0 (2025-10-21) added a security restriction: by default the image optimizer will not fetch from local or private IP addresses (SSRF protection). The new images.dangerouslyAllowLocalIP option defaults to false. The same release changed images.maximumRedirects from unlimited to 3.
Verify
The failing /_next/image?url=... request returns 200 after a restart.
