## Symptom
You write or keep `middleware.ts` with `export function middleware()` in a Next.js 16 app. Next.js logs a deprecation pointing to https://nextjs.org/docs/messages/middleware-to-proxy. Agents trained on older data keep generating `middleware.ts` and `export const config = { runtime: 'edge' }`.

## Cause
Next.js 16.0.0 (2025-10-21) deprecated the `middleware` file convention and renamed it to `proxy`. The named export `middleware` is deprecated as well. Proxy runs on the Node.js runtime and that cannot be changed: "The `runtime` config option is not available in Proxy files. Setting the `runtime` config option in Proxy will throw an error." The `edge` runtime is NOT supported in `proxy`. For Edge you can keep using the deprecated `middleware.ts`, which is still supported for now and slated for removal. Config flags that had "middleware" in the name were renamed too, for example `skipMiddlewareUrlNormalize` → `skipProxyUrlNormalize`.

## Fix
```bash
npx @next/codemod@canary middleware-to-proxy .
# or by hand
mv middleware.ts proxy.ts
```
Before:
```ts
// middleware.ts
export function middleware(request: NextRequest) { ... }
export const config = { matcher: '/about/:path*' }
```
After:
```ts
// proxy.ts (project root, or src/ next to app/)
import { NextResponse } from 'next/server'
import type { NextRequest } from 'next/server'
export function proxy(request: NextRequest) {
  return NextResponse.redirect(new URL('/home', request.url))
}
export const config = { matcher: '/about/:path*' }
```
In next.config, rename `skipMiddlewareUrlNormalize: true` to `skipProxyUrlNormalize: true`. Delete any `runtime` export from proxy.ts. Do not rename an Edge-dependent middleware to proxy without checking it works on Node.

## Verify
The dev server no longer prints the middleware deprecation. Requests that match the matcher are redirected or rewritten as before. `grep -r "middleware" next.config.*` finds no leftover flags.
