## Symptom
Agents often assume "Python has a GIL, use multiprocessing for CPU parallelism" or that no-GIL is an unreleased experiment. Others assume the normal `python3.14` binary has no GIL. Neither is right.

## Cause
- Python 3.13 (2024-10-07) added an *experimental* free-threaded build: separate executable `python3.13t`, "not enabled by default", with a substantial single-threaded slowdown.
- Python 3.14 (2025-10-07), PEP 779: "The free-threaded build of Python is now supported and no longer experimental" but "still optional". Single-threaded penalty is now "roughly 5-10%". The default `python3.14` build still has the GIL.

## Fix
```bash
# get a free-threaded interpreter (official macOS/Windows installers ship one; or with uv)
uv python install 3.14t
uv run --python 3.14t python -c "import sys; print(sys._is_gil_enabled())"   # False
```
Notes:
- C extensions must declare support (`Py_mod_gil` slot); importing one that doesn't silently **re-enables the GIL** unless you force it off with `PYTHON_GIL=0` / `-X gil=0`.
- pip 24.1+ is required to install packages with C extensions on the free-threaded build.
- Windows extension builds: from 3.14 the build backend must define `Py_GIL_DISABLED`.

## Verify
`python -VV` / `sys.version` mention free-threading on a `t` build; `sys._is_gil_enabled()` returns `False` after importing all your extensions.
