Go 1.25 GOMAXPROCS follows the container CPU limit (cgroup) and updates at runtime; drop automaxprocs
- Usually: do nothing, and remove
automaxprocs(and anyGOMAXPROCSenv var that only mirrored the limit) so the runtime can track resizes. - Pods with only CPU requests and no limit still get GOMAXPROCS = node CPUs; set
GOMAXPROCSexplicitly if you want fewer. - To restore old behaviour:
GODEBUG=containermaxprocs=0,updatemaxprocs=0, or for modulesgodebug containermaxprocs=0in go.mod.
Symptom
After moving to Go 1.25, a service in Kubernetes reports a lower runtime.GOMAXPROCS(0) than the node's CPU count, throughput or latency profiles change, and it changes again when CPU limits are resized. Many codebases still import go.uber.org/automaxprocs to get this behaviour.
Cause
Go 1.25 (2025-08-12) made the default GOMAXPROCS container-aware: on Linux it uses the cgroup CPU bandwidth limit (the Kubernetes CPU limit, not the request) when it is lower than the logical CPU count, and on all OSes the runtime periodically updates GOMAXPROCS when CPU count or limit changes. Both are disabled if you set GOMAXPROCS via env or runtime.GOMAXPROCS.
Verify
Log runtime.GOMAXPROCS(0) at startup; it tracks the pod CPU limit rather than the node CPU count (or equals the CPU count when there is no limit).
