Mixing old (on:click) and new syntaxes for event handling is not allowed — Svelte 5 uses onclick + callback props
Mixing old (on:%name%) and new syntaxes for event handling is not allowed. Use only the on%name% syntax
DOM events:
<!-- before -->
<button on:click|preventDefault={handler}>Save</button>
<!-- after -->
<button onclick={(e) => { e.preventDefault(); handler(e); }}>Save</button>
Component events (child):
<!-- before -->
<script>
import { createEventDispatcher } from 'svelte';
const dispatch = createEventDispatcher();
</script>
<button on:click={() => dispatch('inflate', 5)}>inflate</button>
<!-- after -->
<script>
let { inflate } = $props();
</script>
<button onclick={() => inflate(5)}>inflate</button>
Parent: <Pump on:inflate={(e) => size += e.detail} /> becomes <Pump inflate={(power) => size += power} />. The payload is passed directly instead of through .detail. To forward an element event, accept an onclick prop and spread {...props} (put local handlers after the spread). Use onclickcapture for capture.
Symptom
Svelte 5 compiler error mixed_event_handler_syntaxes (for example Mixing old (on:click) and new syntaxes for event handling is not allowed. Use only the onclick syntax) in a component that has both on:click={...} and onclick={...}. Event modifiers like on:click|preventDefault have no equivalent in the new syntax. createEventDispatcher is deprecated.
Cause
In Svelte 5 (2024-10-22), DOM event handlers are plain properties (onclick), and component events are callback props. The on: directive, event modifiers and createEventDispatcher are deprecated, and one component cannot mix the old and new syntax. Duplicate handlers (on:click={a} on:click={b}) are not allowed either.
Verify
npx svelte-check passes, and grep -rn "on:" src --include=*.svelte only matches components you have deliberately left in legacy mode.
