## Error

```text
old cluster does not use data checksums but the new one does
```

## Symptom
`pg_upgrade` from PostgreSQL 17 (or older) to 18 stops with:

```
old cluster does not use data checksums but the new one does
```

Seen with distro upgrade scripts and the `tianon/postgres-upgrade` image.

## Cause
PostgreSQL 18 (2025-09-25) changed the `initdb` default to **enable data checksums**. Clusters created by earlier versions had them off by default. `pg_upgrade` requires matching checksum settings.

## Fix
Option A: create the new 18 cluster without checksums (fast, matches the old one):
```bash
initdb --no-data-checksums -D /path/to/18/data
# Debian/Ubuntu: pg_createcluster 18 main -- --no-data-checksums
```
Option B: keep checksums by enabling them on the stopped old cluster first (rewrites every page; slow on big databases):
```bash
pg_ctl -D /path/to/17/data stop
pg_checksums --enable -D /path/to/17/data
```
Option C: on a fresh, empty 18 cluster you can turn them off with `pg_checksums --disable -D <newdata>` before upgrading.

Run `pg_upgrade --check ...` first to catch this before doing the real upgrade.

## Verify
`pg_controldata <datadir> | grep checksum` shows the same `Data page checksum version` for old and new; `pg_upgrade --check` passes.
