Bun 1.2+: lockfile is text bun.lock, not binary bun.lockb — bun.lockb is not auto-migrated; convert it yourself
Migrate an existing binary lockfile:
bun install --save-text-lockfile --frozen-lockfile --lockfile-only
rm bun.lockb
git add bun.lock && git rm --cached bun.lockb
Update references:
# before
COPY package.json bun.lockb ./
# after
COPY package.json bun.lock ./
RUN bun install --frozen-lockfile
Pin the Bun version in CI (e.g. oven-sh/setup-bun with bun-version matching local, or "packageManager": "bun@1.4.x") so an older Bun is not asked to read a v2/v3 bun.lock.
Symptom
Older guides, Dockerfiles and CI caches reference bun.lockb (e.g. COPY package.json bun.lockb ./, cache key on bun.lockb, .gitattributes diff driver for lockb). New projects have no bun.lockb — they have a JSONC bun.lock — so the COPY fails or the cache never hits. Conversely, an existing repo still has bun.lockb and an agent assumes Bun will upgrade it on the next install.
Cause
Bun 1.2 (2025-01-22) made the text lockfile bun.lock the default: "For new projects without a lockfile, Bun will generate a new bun.lock file." Existing bun.lockb keeps being used and updated "without migration to the new lockfile". Bun 1.4 (2026-08-20) still reads bun.lockb but writes new text lockfiles as lockfileVersion: 2 (or 3 with nested/version-scoped overrides) — "Older Bun cannot read version 3" — so all machines/CI must run the same Bun line.
Verify
head -3 bun.lock shows "lockfileVersion"; bun install --frozen-lockfile succeeds locally and in CI with no lockfile diff.
