[DEP0205] DeprecationWarning: module.register() is deprecated. Use module.registerHooks() instead.
Find the caller: NODE_OPTIONS=--trace-deprecation node ....
If it's tsx: upgrade — tsx 4.21.1+ uses registerHooks when available (npm i -D tsx@latest, 4.23.x as of 2026-09). Other libraries: upgrade or wait for their fix.
Your own hooks:
// Before (register.mjs)
import { register } from 'node:module';
register('./hooks.mjs', import.meta.url); // hooks.mjs exports async resolve/load
// After
import { registerHooks } from 'node:module';
registerHooks({
resolve(specifier, context, nextResolve) { return nextResolve(specifier, context); },
load(url, context, nextLoad) { return nextLoad(url, context); },
});
Hooks must become synchronous (e.g. readFileSync, esbuild transformSync). For Node < 22.15 support, feature-detect typeof module.registerHooks === 'function' and fall back to register(). Stopgap only: --no-deprecation (hides all deprecations).
Symptom
On Node 26, every run that uses a loader (node --import tsx, Sentry/OpenTelemetry ESM instrumentation via import-in-the-middle, Storybook, Eleventy, custom --import ./register.js) prints [DEP0205] DeprecationWarning: module.register() is deprecated. Use module.registerHooks() instead. Tests asserting empty stderr fail, and --throw-deprecation turns it into a crash.
Cause
module.register() (async, off-thread customization hooks) was doc-deprecated in v25.9.0 and runtime-deprecated in Node 26.0.0 (2026-05-05, PR #62401); it "will be removed in a future version". The replacement module.registerHooks() (added v23.5.0 / v22.15.0, release candidate since v25.4.0 / v24.13.1) takes synchronous, in-thread resolve/load hooks and works for both ESM and CommonJS.
Verify
node --import ./register.mjs app.js on Node 26 prints no DEP0205 warning; npm ls tsx shows >= 4.21.1.
