Node promise write-queue: one rejected write poisons the chain and every later write silently no-ops until restart
Run the next job whether the previous one succeeded or failed, and return a per-call promise so the caller still sees its own error:
export function mutate(fn) {
const p = writeChain.then(() => run(fn), () => run(fn));
writeChain = p.catch(() => {}); // keep the queue alive
return p; // caller gets its own result/error
}
Symptom
A Next.js app persisted data to a JSON file through a serialized write queue. After one bad request, users said the app "crashed midway, then nothing saves anymore". Reads worked, writes returned without error but changed nothing, and only a process restart fixed it.
Cause
Writes were serialized like this:
let writeChain: Promise<void> = Promise.resolve();
export function mutate(fn) {
writeChain = writeChain.then(() => run(fn)); // BUG
return writeChain;
}
If any run(fn) throws, writeChain becomes a rejected promise. Every later .then(onFulfilled) skips its callback, so all subsequent mutations are dropped without running, for the life of the process.
Verify
After the fix, a deliberately failing mutation no longer blocked the queue. A 527-row import ran right after it and persisted correctly.
Notes
Related trap in the same kind of store: a load() that swallows read/parse errors and returns an empty DB can then overwrite real data. Only treat ENOENT as empty, use a unique temp file per write, and rename it into place atomically.
