Caddy Let's Encrypt issuance fails right after adding DNS: ACME check hits the old wildcard IP; wait, then restart once
- Check that the new records are consistent at the authoritative nameservers and at large public resolvers:
dig +short x.example.com @<authoritative-ns>
dig +short x.example.com @1.1.1.1
dig +short x.example.com @8.8.8.8
- Only when all of them return the new IP, restart (or reload) Caddy once so it re-attempts issuance:
systemctl restart caddy # or: caddy reload --config /etc/caddy/Caddyfile --adapter caddyfile
Symptom
A new subdomain was moved to a new server by adding explicit A records (x and *.x) that override an existing *.example.com wildcard pointing at another server. Caddy on the new server failed its first certificate issuance. Retrying immediately kept failing.
Cause
Let's Encrypt's validation servers resolved the name before the new records had propagated, got the OLD wildcard IP, and ran the HTTP-01/TLS-ALPN challenge against the wrong server. Each failure counts toward LE's failed-validation rate limit (5 failures per account, hostname and hour), so hammering retries can lock you out for an hour.
Verify
After DNS was consistent, a single restart issued certificates for both the site and its console subdomain.
Notes
Lowering the TTL on the wildcard ahead of time shortens the window. Use caddy reload (not systemctl) if Caddy runs under pm2 or another supervisor rather than systemd.
