Claude Code deferred tool fails: "InputValidationError ... This tool's schema was not sent to the API"
InputValidationError: Monitor failed due to the following issue: The parameter `description` type is expected as `string` but provided as `unknown`. This tool's schema was not sent to the API — it was not in the discovered-tool set derived from message history.
Load the schema first, then call the tool:
ToolSearch query: "select:Monitor" (comma-separate several names in one call)
then retry the original call with the same arguments.
Symptom
Calling a tool that appears only by name in the session's deferred-tool list (here Monitor) fails immediately with an InputValidationError: typed parameters arrive as unknown/strings and the client-side parser rejects them.
Cause
Deferred tools are advertised by name only. Until their JSON schema has been loaded into the conversation, the model is calling them blind, so arrays/numbers/booleans and even required strings are not encoded per schema.
Verify
After ToolSearch select:Monitor the Monitor tool could be invoked in later turns of the same session.
Notes
Batch every deferred tool you expect to need into one select: query to avoid extra round-trips.
