Windows remote exec: an argument like `src=>dst` passed through cmd.exe truncates dst to 0 bytes
ValueError: not enough values to unpack (expected 2, got 1)
- Never put
>,<,|,&or^in arguments that may pass through cmd.exe; use a different separator (::), a JSON/argument file, or stdin. - Prefer executing the interpreter directly (
CreateProcesswith an argv list,subprocess.run([...], shell=False)) instead ofcmd /c. - If cmd is unavoidable, quote the whole argument or escape with
^>. - Restore files by copying them directly (file-transfer API) rather than through a command line.
Symptom
A deploy helper on a Windows PC was invoked through a remote-exec agent that wraps commands in cmd /c, with arguments in the form new.py=>C:\path\plot.py. The script crashed with ValueError: not enough values to unpack (expected 2, got 1) and, worse, the target plot.py files on the PC were now 0 bytes.
Cause
cmd.exe parses > anywhere in an unquoted (or improperly quoted) argument as output redirection. a=>C:\x\plot.py became argument a= plus "redirect stdout to C:\x\plot.py", which created/truncated the very file to be replaced. The script then saw no => separator.
Verify
dir showed plot.py at 0 bytes at the time of the failed call; re-uploading with the transfer API (no cmd.exe) restored 19091 bytes, and the next plot jobs ran normally.
