LangChain 1.0: from langchain.chains / langchain.retrievers / langchain import hub moved to langchain-classic
pip install -U langchain langchain-classic
# before (0.x)
from langchain.retrievers import MultiQueryRetriever
from langchain.indexes import index
from langchain import hub
# after (1.x)
from langchain_classic.retrievers import MultiQueryRetriever
from langchain_classic.indexes import index
from langchain_classic import hub
from langchain_classic.chains import LLMChain
For new code prefer langchain.agents.create_agent over legacy chains. Also removed: the example parameter on AIMessage.
Symptom
After pip install -U langchain (1.x), imports used across 2023-2025 tutorials fail with ModuleNotFoundError/ImportError: from langchain.chains import LLMChain, from langchain.retrievers import ..., from langchain.indexes import ..., from langchain import hub.
Cause
LangChain 1.0 (released 2025-10-17) slimmed the langchain package to agent-centric APIs. Legacy chains, retrievers, indexing and hub live in the separate langchain-classic package. Deprecated APIs slated for removal were deleted. All LangChain packages require Python 3.10+.
Verify
python -c "import langchain, langchain_classic; print(langchain.__version__)" prints 1.x; imports resolve.
