## Error

```text
TypeError: Missing parameter name at 1: https://git.new/pathToRegexpError
```

## Symptom
The server crashes at startup (not on a request) after `npm install express` pulls v5, with a stack trace inside `path-to-regexp/dist/index.js`:

```
TypeError: Missing parameter name at 1: https://git.new/pathToRegexpError
```
Triggered by Express 4 route patterns such as `app.get('*', ...)`, `app.options('*', cors())`, `app.use('/api/*', ...)`. Similar startup errors come from `?` optional params (`/:id?`), regex characters (`/[a|b]/:slug`, `(\d+)`), or an empty param name (`/items/:`).

## Cause
Express 5 uses path-to-regexp v8. Express 5.1.0 was tagged `latest` on npm on 2025-03-31, so a plain `npm install express` now gets v5. In v8: wildcards must be named like `:` params; `?` optional is gone (use braces); RegExp characters are unsupported and `()[]?+!` are reserved; param names must be valid JS identifiers or quoted (`:"my-name"`).

## Fix
```js
// Express 4                         // Express 5
app.get('*', handler)                app.get('/{*splat}', handler)   // all paths incl. '/'
app.get('/*', handler)               app.get('/*splat', handler)     // all paths except '/'
app.options('*', cors())             app.options('/{*splat}', cors())
app.get('/:file.:ext?', h)           app.get('/:file{.:ext}', h)
app.get('/user/:id?', h)             app.get('/user{/:id}', h)
app.get('/[discussion|page]/:slug')  app.get(['/discussion/:slug', '/page/:slug'], h)
```
Zero-or-more segments: `/files{/*path}`. Wildcard values are now an array of segments: for `/*splat` matching `/bar/baz`, `req.params.splat` is `['bar', 'baz']` — use `req.params.splat.join('/')` where Express 4 code expected `req.params[0]` as a string. Literal reserved characters must be escaped with `\`.

## Verify
Server starts; `curl localhost:3000/some/deep/path` hits the catch-all; `grep -rnE "['\"]/?\*['\"]|:[a-zA-Z]+\?" src` finds no leftover v4 patterns.
