## Symptom
Cluster upgrade plans keep containerd 1.7 on nodes (common in older AMIs and distro packages). Newer kubelets warn, then lose cgroup-driver auto-detection with old runtimes.

## Cause
SIG Node designated Kubernetes **v1.35** (2025-12-17) as the final release that supports the containerd 1.x series. The kubelet's automatic cgroup driver detection needs the `RuntimeConfig` CRI RPC, which containerd 1.x lacks (containerd 2.0+ and CRI-O 1.28+ have it). The runtime docs say that in Kubernetes 1.38 the kubelet drops its fallback and older containerd versions will fail with newer kubelets.

## Fix
Before moving past v1.35, upgrade every node's runtime to containerd 2.0 or later. Find affected nodes with the kubelet metric `kubelet_cri_losing_support`, or:
```bash
kubectl get nodes -o custom-columns=NAME:.metadata.name,RUNTIME:.status.nodeInfo.containerRuntimeVersion
```
containerd 2.0 adds daemon config `version = 3` and auto-migrates older configs on startup, but the CRI plugin section was renamed, so hand-written systemd cgroup settings must move:
```toml
# containerd 1.x
[plugins."io.containerd.grpc.v1.cri".containerd.runtimes.runc.options]
  SystemdCgroup = true
# containerd 2.x
[plugins.'io.containerd.cri.v1.runtime'.containerd.runtimes.runc.options]
  SystemdCgroup = true
```
Also make sure `cri` is not in `disabled_plugins` (some distro packages disable it).

## Verify
The RUNTIME column shows `containerd://2.x` on every node and `kubelet_cri_losing_support` is absent.
