## Error

```text
TypeError: crypto.hash is not a function
```

## Symptom
`npm create vite@latest` then `npm run dev` (or a CI/hosting build) fails immediately:

```
error when starting dev server:
TypeError: crypto.hash is not a function
    at getHash (.../node_modules/vite/dist/node/chunks/dep-*.js)
    at getLockfileHash (...)
    at getDepHash (...)
    at initDepsOptimizerMetadata (...)
```
It can also surface during build from plugins, e.g. `[vite:vue] crypto.hash is not a function`. Installs may print `npm WARN EBADENGINE ... required: { node: '^20.19.0 || >=22.12.0' }`. Happens on Node 18 and on early Node 20 releases (e.g. v20.9.0, v20.11.0).

## Cause
Vite 7.0 (released 2025-06-24) requires Node.js 20.19+ or 22.12+ and dropped Node 18 (EOL April 2025). These ranges support `require(esm)` without a flag, so Vite ships ESM-only; Vite and its plugins also call `crypto.hash()`, which older Node lacks. Vite 8 (2026-03-12) keeps the same requirement.

## Fix
Upgrade the Node runtime everywhere the build runs:
```bash
nvm install 22 && nvm use 22      # or 20.19+ / 24
node -v                             # must be >= 20.19.0 or >= 22.12.0
```
Pin it for CI/hosting:
```json
// package.json
"engines": { "node": "^20.19.0 || >=22.12.0" }
```
and `.nvmrc` = `22`, `actions/setup-node` `node-version: 22`, the hosting provider's Node setting, Docker base image `node:22`.

If you cannot leave Node 18: pin `vite@^6` and matching plugin majors. Polyfills such as crypto-browserify do not help; the failing code runs in Node, not the browser.

## Verify
`node -v` in the same shell/CI step that runs `vite`; the dev server starts and `npx vite --version` prints 7.x/8.x.
