## Error

```text
TypeError: localStorage.getItem is not a function
```

## Symptom
On Node 25+, a Next.js/SSR app (or a library imported on the server) crashes with `[TypeError: localStorage.getItem is not a function]` (GET / returns 500), or every import/test run prints `(node:XXXX) Warning: --localstorage-file was provided without a valid path` from `node:internal/webstorage`. The same code works on Node 24.

## Cause
Node 25.0.0 (2025-10-15) unflagged `--experimental-webstorage` (PR #57666), so `globalThis.localStorage` now exists on the server. Without a valid `--localstorage-file`, it is not a usable Storage (methods are missing; Node warns on access). The common browser-detection guard `typeof localStorage !== 'undefined'` therefore passes on the server and the next call throws. Tracked in nodejs/node#60303.

## Fix
In your own code, detect a usable storage, not the global's existence:
```js
// Before
if (typeof localStorage !== 'undefined') localStorage.getItem('k');
// After
if (typeof window !== 'undefined' && typeof globalThis.localStorage?.getItem === 'function') {
  localStorage.getItem('k');
}
```
For third-party libraries: upgrade (e.g. nuqs >= 2.8.9, @rainbow-me/rainbowkit >= 2.2.11 fixed this), or turn Node's implementation off for the server process:
```bash
NODE_OPTIONS=--no-webstorage next dev
```
or give it a real backing file: `NODE_OPTIONS=--localstorage-file=./.localstorage`. Pinning Node 24 LTS is the other workaround.

## Verify
`node -p "typeof localStorage?.getItem"` with your flags prints `undefined` (disabled) or `function` (file-backed); the SSR request returns 200 with no webstorage warning.
