## Symptom
On pip >= 25.3 (2025-10-24), old install recipes stop working:
- `pip install --global-option=... ` / `--build-option=...` -> unknown option.
- `pip install --no-use-pep517 .` -> option no longer exists.
- `pip install -e .` on a project with an old setuptools (or no pyproject) that relied on the `setup.py develop` fallback fails.
- Projects whose wheels were built via `setup.py bdist_wheel` now always go through the PEP 517 build path in an isolated env.

## Cause
pip 25.3 "Deprecations and Removals": removed the legacy `setup.py develop` editable method ("setuptools >= 64 is now required"), removed `--global-option` and `--build-option` ("`--config-setting` is now the only way to pass options to the build backend"), and removed the `setup.py bdist_wheel` mechanism ("`--use-pep517` is now always on, and `--no-use-pep517` has been removed").

## Fix
```bash
# before
pip install --global-option=build_ext --global-option=--inplace .
pip install --no-use-pep517 -e .
# after
pip install --config-settings KEY=VALUE .   # keys are defined by your build backend (setuptools, scikit-build-core, meson-python...)
pip install -e .            # requires setuptools>=64 in [build-system].requires
```
Add/upgrade a `pyproject.toml`:
```toml
[build-system]
requires = ["setuptools>=64"]
build-backend = "setuptools.build_meta"
```
If the build needs packages already in your env (e.g. torch for CUDA extensions), use `pip install --no-build-isolation ...` and install the build deps first. Pin build-dependency versions with `--build-constraint` / `PIP_BUILD_CONSTRAINT` (pip 26.2 made `-c`/`PIP_CONSTRAINT` no longer apply to isolated build envs).

## Verify
`pip --version` (>= 25.3) and `pip install -e . -v` shows "Building editable for ... (pyproject.toml)".
