## Symptom
On PostgreSQL 18, a column declared `GENERATED ALWAYS AS (expr)` with no keyword is computed on read instead of being written to disk. Expressions that call your own SQL functions or use custom types are rejected, and the column is not sent over logical replication. Before 18, `STORED` was the only kind and had to be written out, so older DDL always says `STORED`; newer hand-written or generated DDL may omit it.

## Cause
PostgreSQL 18 (2025-09-25) added virtual generated columns and made them the default kind. Docs: "A generated column is by default of the virtual kind. Use the keywords VIRTUAL or STORED to make the choice explicit." Virtual columns may only use built-in functions and types, and logical replication of generated columns (`publish_generated_columns`) currently supports only stored ones.

## Fix
Be explicit:
```sql
-- materialized on write (pre-18 behaviour)
height_in numeric GENERATED ALWAYS AS (height_cm / 2.54) STORED
-- computed on read, no storage
height_in numeric GENERATED ALWAYS AS (height_cm / 2.54) VIRTUAL
```
Use `STORED` when the expression uses user-defined functions/types, when the column must be replicated, or when you want to pay the cost on write.

## Verify
`SELECT attname, attgenerated FROM pg_attribute WHERE attrelid = 'people'::regclass AND attgenerated <> '';` returns `s` for stored, `v` for virtual.
