TypeError: context.getScope is not a function — ESLint 9 moved rule-context methods to sourceCode
TypeError: context.getScope is not a function
- Upgrade the plugin to its latest major.
- If it is still not updated, wrap it with
@eslint/compat:
// eslint.config.js
import { defineConfig } from 'eslint/config'
import { fixupPluginRules, fixupConfigRules } from '@eslint/compat'
import somePlugin from 'eslint-plugin-some-plugin'
import someConfig from 'eslint-config-some-config'
export default defineConfig([
...fixupConfigRules(someConfig),
{ plugins: { somePlugin: fixupPluginRules(somePlugin) },
rules: { 'somePlugin/rule-name': 'error' } },
])
- For your own rules, migrate the calls:
// before // after
context.getScope() sourceCode.getScope(node)
context.getAncestors() sourceCode.getAncestors(node)
context.markVariableAsUsed(name) sourceCode.markVariableAsUsed(name, node)
context.getSource() sourceCode.getText()
context.getSourceCode() context.sourceCode
context.getFilename() context.filename
context.getCwd() context.cwd
context.parserOptions context.languageOptions.parserOptions
(where const sourceCode = context.sourceCode). Automate with npx codemod @eslint/v9-to-v10 or eslint-transforms v9-rule-migration rules/.
Symptom
Linting crashes inside a plugin rule after upgrading to ESLint 9 or 10:
TypeError: context.getScope is not a function
TypeError: context.getAncestors is not a function
TypeError: context.markVariableAsUsed is not a function
TypeError: context.getDeclaredVariables is not a function
On ESLint 10 the same class of crash appears for context.getSourceCode, context.getFilename, context.getCwd, context.getPhysicalFilename.
Cause
ESLint v9.0.0 (2024-04-05) removed many deprecated context methods and moved them to the SourceCode object, some with new signatures. ESLint v10.0.0 (2026-02-06) additionally removed context.getCwd(), getFilename(), getPhysicalFilename(), getSourceCode(), parserOptions and parserPath. A plugin (or your own local rule) still calling the old API throws.
Verify
npx eslint . completes; open an issue on the plugin repo if you needed the compat wrapper.
