pnpm 10: eslint/prettier plugins no longer hoisted to root node_modules — editor/IDE can't find them
Preferred: declare the plugins/configs as direct devDependencies of the package that runs ESLint/Prettier (and of the workspace root if tools run from there):
pnpm add -D -w eslint-plugin-react prettier-plugin-tailwindcss
Or restore the old hoisting explicitly:
# pnpm-workspace.yaml (pnpm 11 reads settings only from here)
publicHoistPattern:
- '*eslint*'
- '*prettier*'
(pnpm 10 also accepts public-hoist-pattern[]=*eslint* in .npmrc; pnpm 11 ignores non-auth .npmrc settings.) Then pnpm install.
Symptom
After upgrading to pnpm 10, an editor extension, a globally run eslint, or a shared config in a monorepo can't resolve eslint-plugin-*, eslint-config-* or prettier-plugin-* packages that are only dependencies of another package (e.g. a shared @repo/eslint-config). It worked on pnpm 9 because those were publicly hoisted to the root node_modules.
Cause
pnpm 10.0.0 (2025-01-07): "public-hoist-pattern: nothing is hoisted by default. Packages containing eslint or prettier in their name are no longer hoisted to the root of node_modules."
Verify
ls node_modules | grep -E 'eslint|prettier' at the root shows the packages (if hoisting), or node -e "require.resolve('eslint-plugin-react')" succeeds from the package directory.
