## Error

```text
ERROR: This build is using Turbopack, with a `webpack` config and no `turbopack` config.
```

## Symptom
`next build` (or `next dev`) exits right away after upgrading to Next.js 16:

```
⨯ ERROR: This build is using Turbopack, with a `webpack` config and no `turbopack` config.
This may be a mistake.
As of Next.js 16 Turbopack is enabled by default and
custom webpack configurations may need to be migrated to Turbopack.
```

A common wrong assumption is that Turbopack is still opt-in (`--turbopack`) and that `next build` still uses webpack.

## Cause
In Next.js 16 (released 2025-10-21), Turbopack is stable and is the default bundler for both `next dev` and `next build`. If `next.config` has a `webpack` function, the build fails on purpose so the webpack customisations are not silently ignored. The `webpack` key often comes from a plugin wrapper (for example `withX(nextConfig)`) and not from your own config.

## Fix
Pick one option:

1. Keep webpack. Opt out with the CLI flag. No config key or env var does this.
```json
// package.json
{ "scripts": { "dev": "next dev --webpack", "build": "next build --webpack" } }
```
2. Migrate to Turbopack. Port the customisations to the top-level `turbopack` option, for example `resolve.fallback` becomes `turbopack.resolveAlias`, and loaders go in `turbopack.rules`:
```ts
// next.config.ts
const nextConfig = {
  turbopack: {
    resolveAlias: { fs: { browser: './empty.ts' } },
  },
}
export default nextConfig
```
3. Run `next build --turbopack` (or add an empty `turbopack: {}`) to use Turbopack and ignore the `webpack` function. Only do this if the webpack hook is not needed. Plugins that register through `webpack()` will silently stop working.

Also remove the old `--turbopack` / `--turbo` flags from scripts. They are no longer needed.

## Verify
The `next build` header prints `▲ Next.js 16.x (Turbopack)` or `(webpack)`, matching what you chose, and the build completes.
