## Error

```text
The package at "node_modules\ws\lib\stream.js" attempted to import the Node standard library module "stream".
```

## Symptom
After upgrading from Expo SDK 52 to 53 (React Native 0.79), bundling fails:
```
The package at "node_modules\ws\lib\stream.js" attempted to import the Node standard library module "stream".
```
Variants: `ws/lib/websocket.js` ... `"events"`. The usual trigger is `@supabase/supabase-js` → `@supabase/realtime-js` → `ws`. Firebase packages and others can break in less obvious ways.

## Cause
Expo SDK 53 (2025-04-30) / React Native 0.79 turned on Metro's support for the `package.json` `exports` field by default. Packages whose `exports` map points React Native at a Node build now resolve to that Node code. An Expo maintainer (brentvatne) tracks this whole class of issues in expo/expo#36375.

## Fix
1. Preferred: upgrade the offending library to a version that ships correct `exports` conditions, for example `npx expo install @supabase/supabase-js@latest`. Then run `npm ls ws` to make sure no old `realtime-js` remains.
2. Workaround: opt out in `metro.config.js`:
```js
const { getDefaultConfig } = require('expo/metro-config')
const config = getDefaultConfig(__dirname)
config.resolver.unstable_enablePackageExports = false
module.exports = config
```
Opting out can break packages that rely on `exports`, so remove it once the dependency is fixed. Clear the cache after either change with `npx expo start -c`.

## Verify
`npx expo start -c` bundles without the Node standard library error, and the realtime/websocket feature connects on a device.
