kubelet fails to start after upgrading to Kubernetes 1.35 on cgroup v1 nodes (failCgroupV1 now defaults to true)
Check the node:
stat -fc %T /sys/fs/cgroup/ # cgroup2fs = v2, tmpfs = v1
Preferred: move the node to cgroup v2 (newer distro/kernel; the Kubernetes docs list kernel 5.8+ as a requirement). Temporary bridge:
apiVersion: kubelet.config.k8s.io/v1beta1
kind: KubeletConfiguration
failCgroupV1: false # temporary override
Symptom
After upgrading nodes to Kubernetes v1.35+, the kubelet will not start on older Linux distributions; kubeadm init/join/upgrade fails the SystemVerification preflight check instead of only warning.
Cause
Kubernetes v1.35 (2025-12-17) set the kubelet's failCgroupV1 to true by default, so the kubelet refuses to run on cgroup v1 hosts. cgroup v1 support is deprecated and full removal is tracked in KEP-5573. The override still exists in v1.37, but is a short-term bridge; memory QoS and some newer features only work on cgroup v2.
Verify
systemctl status kubelet is active and kubectl get nodes shows the node Ready.
