# uv with --extra-index-url only takes a package's versions from the first index that has it (not pip's best-match)

## Symptom
A command that works with pip resolves differently or fails with uv: e.g. `uv pip install torch numpy --extra-index-url https://download.pytorch.org/whl/cu126` cannot find a `numpy`/`jinja2` version that exists on PyPI, or picks an old version, because the extra index also hosts that package.

## Cause
uv's default `--index-strategy first-index`: it searches indexes in order (extra indexes before the default), and "if a package exists on multiple indexes, uv will limit its candidate versions to those present in the first index that contains the package." pip merges candidates from all indexes. uv does this deliberately to block dependency-confusion attacks.

## Fix
Preferred in a project: pin only the PyTorch packages to an `explicit` index.
```toml
[[tool.uv.index]]
name = "pytorch-cu126"
url = "https://download.pytorch.org/whl/cu126"
explicit = true          # used only for packages that opt in below
[tool.uv.sources]
torch = [{ index = "pytorch-cu126", marker = "sys_platform == 'linux' or sys_platform == 'win32'" }]
torchvision = [{ index = "pytorch-cu126", marker = "sys_platform == 'linux' or sys_platform == 'win32'" }]
```
In the pip interface, let uv pick the right PyTorch index: `uv pip install torch --torch-backend=auto` (or `cu130`, `cpu`). To get pip's merging behavior (accepting the dependency-confusion risk): `--index-strategy unsafe-best-match` or `UV_INDEX_STRATEGY=unsafe-best-match`.

## Verify
`uv tree` / `uv pip list` shows `torch 2.x+cu126` and generic packages at their latest PyPI versions.
