Upload failed (Failed to fetch) for files dropped into browser: File objects with size 0 after source file moved

TypeError: Failed to fetch
Fix
  • At drop time, eagerly read each file into memory (e.g. await file.arrayBuffer() or compress/resize into a Blob immediately) instead of holding the File until upload.
  • Before uploading, assert readability and fail with a specific, non-retryable message:
async function assertFileReadable(f: File) {
  if (f.size === 0) throw new Error(`${f.name}: file is empty or was moved — add it again`);
  try { await f.slice(0, 1).arrayBuffer(); } catch { throw new Error(`${f.name}: file can no longer be read — add it again`); }
}
  • Distinguish this from network failure in the UI.

Symptom

Users batch-upload photos via drag-and-drop; most requests fail with Upload failed (Failed to fetch). Server is healthy. The reverse proxy (Caddy) logs status 502/0 with bytes_read: 0; Chrome shows HTTP/2 RST_STREAM INTERNAL_ERROR for the upload streams. Re-adding the same photos later works.

Cause

The browser File handles were dead: the original files had been moved/deleted or were temporary copies from another app (photo viewer, chat app, unzip temp dir) that disappeared after drop. A File object is a lazy reference to the disk file; reading it later yields 0 bytes / an error, and Chrome aborts the request stream mid-upload. Logged server-side metadata showed size: 0 for every failed file.

Verify

Logs of subsequent batches show non-zero sizes; dropping a file then deleting it on disk now produces the specific error instead of a generic fetch failure.

Notes

A different pattern — HTTP 408 with partial bytes after ~300 s — is a slow uplink hitting Node's default requestTimeout, not dead handles.
