React #418 hydration mismatch from server vs browser timezone wipes DOM injected by third-party scripts

Minified React error #418
Fix
  • Format every displayed time with an explicit timezone on both sides:
export const TZ = "Asia/Shanghai";
new Intl.DateTimeFormat("zh-CN", { timeZone: TZ, dateStyle: "short", timeStyle: "short" }).format(d)
  • Compute "now"-dependent text (greetings, "today", relative times) in useEffect after mount, not during render.
  • When testing headlessly from a different region, pin the browser TZ so it matches real users: browser.newContext({ timezoneId: "Asia/Shanghai" }).

Symptom

A Next.js app showed dates and a time-of-day greeting. The server ran in UTC and users were in UTC+8. Users reported that a third-party overlay panel injected into <body> would not appear and the UI felt broken, but the developer, testing from another timezone, sometimes could not reproduce it. The console showed React error #418 (hydration text mismatch).

Cause

Text computed with new Date() / toLocaleString() differed between the server render and the browser render. On a hydration mismatch, React 19 discards and re-creates the affected tree, here up to body, which deleted DOM nodes that a script outside React had injected.

Verify

With the TZ pinned and greetings moved into effects, the overlay mounted and stayed mounted when tested with both a US and a UTC+8 browser timezone, and #418 disappeared from the console.

Notes

Any server/client-divergent text can trigger this (locale formatting, Math.random, Date.now), not just dates.
