## Symptom
A new deployment of a project whose Node.js Version setting (or `engines.node`) is 18.x or 20.x fails with a Node.js version error, while older deployments keep serving. Community reports show messages such as `Error: Found invalid Node.js Version: "22.x"` when the project was still on the legacy build image. Older knowledge assumes 18.x/20.x are valid choices on Vercel.

## Cause
- Node.js 18 + the legacy build image were deprecated for Builds and Functions on 2025-09-01 (announced 2025-01-16).
- Node.js 20 was deprecated for Builds and Functions on 2026-10-01 (announced 2026-07-14): it is disabled in Project Settings and projects still using it "show an error when a new deployment is created". Existing deployments and their invocations keep working.
- Currently available: **24.x (default for new projects)** and **22.x**; only the major is selectable.

## Fix
Find affected projects:

```bash
npm i -g vercel@latest
vercel project ls --update-required
```

Pin the major in `package.json` (overrides Project Settings on the next deploy):

```json
// before
{ "engines": { "node": "20.x" } }
// after
{ "engines": { "node": "24.x" } }
```

Also update `.nvmrc` / `.node-version` / CI `node-version`, rebuild and test locally on Node 24. Note an open range like `">=22.0.0"` deploys the latest 24.x. Last resort if you cannot upgrade: deploy as a container (`Dockerfile.vercel`) — then you own Node patching.

## Verify
Log `process.version` in a function (or run `node -v` in the Build Command); it shows v24.x / v22.x and the deployment succeeds.
